MMA announces guide to federal stimulus package
March 24, 2009The MMA has published – and now features online – a new guide to help Massachusetts local officials fully realize the benefits of the recently enacted federal stimulus package.
The MMA Guide to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes information about the full range of programs, grants and opportunities funded by the federal initiative, organized in seven functional areas: Community and Economic Development and Housing, Education, Energy, the Environment, Public Safety, Telecommunications, and Transportation.
The guide provides a briefing on each program as well as any available contact information and links to the federal and (when applicable) state agencies responsible for administering the program. The guide also identifies the MMA staff person responsible for compiling the information.
The federal stimulus guide on this Web site will serve as a central location for news stories and valuable links to state and federal offices as they announce more details and information in the weeks and months ahead.
President Barack Obama signed the $787 billion federal economic stimulus package on Feb. 17. According to the Obama administration, the package will allocate $288 billion for tax relief, $144 billion for state and local fiscal relief, $111 billion for infrastructure and science, $81 billion for aid to “vulnerable” individuals, $59 billion for health care, $53 billion for education and training, and $43 billion for energy initiatives.
The MMA would like to recognize and thank the California League of Cities for its work in producing the original guidebook and giving the MMA permission to update the document and include information specific to Massachusetts.
