DeLeo elected Speaker of Mass. House
February 06, 2009
Rep. Robert DeLeo, a former selectman in his hometown of Winthrop, was elected Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives on Jan. 28.He replaces Salvatore DiMasi, who had resigned from the Legislature a day earlier.
DeLeo, previously the chair of the House Committee on Ways and Means, is now serving his tenth term in the House. Before being elected to the Legislature, he served three terms on the Winthrop Board of Selectmen, a fact that he mentions frequently when addressing the House and when meeting with local officials.
DeLeo has twice been presented with the MMA’s Legislator of the Year Award. He was first recognized in 1994 for his successful drive to secure additional funds to help cities and towns deal with the brutal winter of 1993. He was honored again in 2007 for his leadership as Ways and Means chair on behalf of cities and towns.
He has met many times with the MMA’s Executive Committee and has attended several MMA Legislative Breakfast meetings.
In remarks to the House after his election as Speaker, DeLeo emphasized the need to provide cities and towns with new tools to address the fiscal crisis that confronts them.
DeLeo was expected to quickly appoint his leadership team and House committee chairs.
