Somerville is one of 10 cities to receive a 2009 “All-America City” award from the National Civic League.

The award recognizes communities that “demonstrate their ability to address serious challenges with innovative, grassroots strategies that promote civic engagement and cooperation between the public, private and nonprofit sectors,” according to the league.

In its application, Somerville highlighted a number of programs and initiatives, including its work to secure the state’s commitment to extend the Green Line to the city, its 311 call center, and its performance management program, known as SomerStat.

Somerville also won an All-America City award in 1972 and was a finalist in 2008.

This year’s other winners were Phoenix; Inglewood, Calif.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Richmond, Ind.; Wichita, Kan.; Albany, N.Y.; Kinston, N.C.; Statesville, N.C.; and Caroline County, Va.

The awards were presented on June 19 in Tampa, Fla.
