Local leaders from 92 communities across Massachusetts have signed on as partners for the MMA’s fourth annual 6th Grade Essay Contest.

Sixth-grade students in these communities will be writing essays that describe what they would do as an elected municipal leader to make their community a better place to live.

The essays will begin with the statement, “If I were elected leader of my community, I would make a difference by …”

The essay contest gives students an opportunity to reflect on the role of key elected officials and encourages the future leaders of the state to think about municipal activities.

Local officials will judge essays based on creativity, clarity/sincerity of thought, proper use of grammar, and understanding of local government.

The first-place prize is a $300 savings bond and an invitation to the MMA Annual Meeting in January, where the winner will read his or her essay before hundreds of local leaders at the Friday night banquet.

The author of the second-place essay will receive a $150 savings bond, and a $100 savings bond will be awarded for third place.

All participating students will receive a gift. A participation prize will also be presented to all teachers whose students submit an essay.

Municipal associations across the country report that essay contest participation is greater in communities where local officials have been in direct contact with schools. Winners usually come from classes where local officials have visited and discussed municipal government. Local leaders are encouraged to work with teachers and school officials to coordinate school visits and promote the contest.

Essays are due Nov. 20 and cannot exceed 300 words.
