New mayors elected in 12 cities

Twelve new mayors were elected in Massachusetts yesterday, including in North Adams, where 13-term incumbent John Barrett III, the state’s longest-serving mayor, lost to Richard Alcombright.

Barrett, who was first elected in 1983, is a longtime member of the MMA Board of Directors.

In Lynn, Judith Kennedy held a 27-vote lead over incumbent Edward Clancy as of this morning, but the Associated Press is reporting that a recount is likely.

In Brockton, Linda Balzotti defeated incumbent James Harrington, and in Worcester Joseph O’Brien prevailed over Konstantina Lukes.

Other candidates who beat incumbents include Daniel Knapik in Westfield, who defeated Michael Boulanger, and Scott Galvin in Woburn, who defeated Thomas McLaughlin.

In Lawrence, William Lantigua became the state’s first Hispanic mayor. In Holyoke, Elaine Pluta became the city’s first female mayor.

New mayors also were chosen in Agawam, Fall River, Newburyport and Newton.

In Boston, Mayor Thomas Menino, the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, was elected to a fifth four-year term.

Mayors in Cambridge and Lowell will be chosen from their respective city councils in January.

Mayors in Malden, Melrose, Revere, Waltham and Weymouth are in the middle of four-year terms and were not up for election. Greenfield’s mayor has a three-year term and is up for election in June 2012.

Eight communities with a city form of government – Barnstable, Chelsea, Franklin, Palmer, Randolph, Southbridge, Watertown and Winthrop – do not have mayors.
