At its Annual Meeting in January, the MMA will present its first annual municipal website awards.

The awards will recognize the best municipal websites in Massachusetts in four population categories: under 5,000; 5,000-15,000; 15,000-50,000; and 50,000-plus.

Contest judges will evaluate municipal websites based on the following criteria:

• Clearly branded as the official municipal government site

• Easily navigable and well-organized

• Robust search function

• Up-to-date information (e.g., board and committee members, meetings calendar)

• Extensive availability of up-to-date public records (e.g., board and committee meeting agendas and minutes, municipal budget, town meeting warrant, bylaws/ordinances)

• Functionality, interactivity and convenience (e.g., ability to apply for permits, pay bills, order documents, and file complaints or suggestions)

• Information about departments (e.g., key personnel, contact information, office hours, and department mission or purpose)

• Contact information, city/town hall address and hours

• Visual appeal and overall experience

Judges will choose one winner in each population category and may, at their discretion, also award an honorable mention.

To participate, communities simply need to indicate that they would their website to be considered. There is no application packet or report to prepare.

Awards will be presented at the MMA Annual Meeting on Jan. 26 in Boston.
