A 19-member Regionalization Advisory Commission will soon be appointed to “review all aspects of regionalization, including possible opportunities, benefits and challenges to regionalizing services within the commonwealth.”

The commission, established by legislation signed on Aug. 6, may be able to promote efforts to regionalize services in areas such as public works, public health and veterans services.

The law calls for commission members to include an MMA representative, state agency heads such as the secretaries of administration and finance, public works and transportation, health and human services, and veterans affairs, and a representative from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council.

The MMA has appointed Franklin Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting, the MMA president, as the association’s representative on the commission.

Three additional appointments will be made by the governor, all of whom must have knowledge and experience in municipal government and/or municipal regionalization.

The law (Chapter 60 of the Acts of 2009) calls for the commission to submit any recommendations to the Legislature no later than April 30, 2010.
