The MMA will release nine new municipal “best practices” at the MMA Annual Meeting & Trade Show on Jan. 20 and 21.

The recommendations in the second volume cover revenue and expenditure forecasting, long-term debt management, managing public records requests, and a range of other topics.

The new “best practices” build on the 14 recommendations released last year. The 2016 recommendations (Volume 1) can be found at www.mma.org/bestpractices. They include recommendations for snow and ice budgeting, municipal reserves, managing unemployment insurance claims, and other ideas.

The “best practice” topics are chosen by the five MMA policy committees early in the year and developed and refined at meetings in the fall.

Some of the suggested practices are based on recommendations developed by national organizations such as the Government Finance Officers Association and the Federal Highway Administration and state agencies such as the Division of Local Services and the Department of Environmental Protection. Others that are more specific to Massachusetts are based on successful practices in cities and towns that can be shared with others.

The MMA is looking forward to working on the 2018 volume. Local officials who have ideas for topics are invited to stop by the MMA booth at the annual trade show and talk to policy committee members and MMA staff.
