Job Description

The town of Swampscott is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Assistant Town Accountant to support the Finance Director in maintaining accurate, transparent, and compliant municipal financial records. This full-time, non-exempt position plays an important role in ensuring the integrity of the town’s accounting operations in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws and GAAP.

Key responsibilities include assisting with the general ledger; reviewing and processing vendor warrants; reconciling accounts; monitoring grants, revolving, capital, and special revenue accounts; and preparing journal entries. The Assistant Town Accountant also supports year-end reporting, audits, Free Cash certification, fixed asset tracking, and school End of Year Reports, while working closely with departments to resolve accounting issues and promote sound financial practices.

Qualified candidates will have an associate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (bachelor’s preferred), at least two years of relevant municipal or accounting experience, and strong analytical and organizational skills. Experience with MUNIS or similar municipal financial systems is highly desirable.
