Building Commissioner
City of Gardner | Full-Time, Exempt

The City of Gardner is seeking an experienced Building Commissioner to lead the Building Department and enforce the Massachusetts State Building Code and zoning regulations citywide. Reporting to the Mayor, this role supervises a team of 11 and oversees plan reviews, permitting, inspections, code enforcement, and municipal building operations — including 24/7 emergency response to structure fires and other disasters.

What You’ll Do

• Manage Building department staff, budget, and operations
• Serve as Zoning Enforcement Officer; review and enforce zoning and permit compliance
• Conduct plan reviews and field inspections for code, safety, and accessibility compliance
• Investigate violations and pursue enforcement through citations and court action
• Respond to emergencies and serve as safety officer at fire scenes

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and five-plus years of experience in building construction or design (or equivalent combination)
• Building Commissioner Certification and Local Inspector Certification
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
• Strong leadership, communication, and budget management skills

Compensation: $87,558.74
