Chief of Staff

Job Description

The city of Newburyport seeks a collaborative, multi-dimensional, and detail-oriented Chief of Staff with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Under the direction of the Mayor, the Chief of Staff will support all operations of the City, including handling the administrative aspects of managing and leading all city departments and fostering strong Council relationships. The Chief of Staff provides professional advice and support to the Mayor, City Council, and a variety of officials, departments, boards and committees concerning the policies, goals, regulations, and statutory requirements related to the administration and operations of the city.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration/policy, management or related field. A master’s degree in a similar field is preferred.
• A minimum of three years of professional experience working with constituents in a fast-paced office setting. Ideally some of this will have been gained in local or state government providing support to elected officials and/or municipal offices.
• Familiarity with key aspects of municipal management including procurement, financial management, budgeting, and relevant Massachusetts General Law.
