Conservation Agent

The town of Ashburnham is seeking applicants for a part-time (32 hours/week with benefits) Conservation Agent.

The Conservation Agent will provide professional management and support to the Conservation Commission, coordinate Commission activities, and perform technical reviews and evaluations of applications/submissions to the Commission involving wetland resource delineations, impact analyses, and mitigation planning/design. The Conservation Agent should understand land use principals, have a working knowledge of the MA Wetlands Protection Act/regulations and their administration, implementation, and enforcement.

Applicants must have the ability to communicate clearly in oral, written, and graphic form; work independently; interpret technical data, engineering maps and plans; work cooperatively with members of municipal boards/commissions; and deal professionally with government agencies, along with project applicants and their attorneys/engineers/consultants, as well as the public. The Conservation Agent also will be required to perform site visits and attend regular meetings of the Commission on an as needed basis.

Assistance in revising existing municipal bylaws and/or the preparation of new bylaws with respect to environmental issues (e.g., wetland resource protection, low impact development, and open space/recreation) will be an important Conservation Agent task, as will the identification of potential grant opportunities, grant proposal preparation, and grant administration.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field preferred. However, applicants with a combination of comparable academic and two plus years’ experience in wetlands protection, land conservation, environmental management, land use or municipal planning will be strongly considered. A valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License is required. This is a part-time position, 32 hours/week with benefits, with a starting salary range of $30.00 – $34.50. Pay is dependent on qualifications.
