The town of East Longmeadow seeks qualified candidates for the full-time position of COA Director.

The Council on Aging Director is responsible for the developing, planning, organizing, administering and evaluating all programs and services in order to meet the social, emotional, economic, and health needs of East Longmeadow senior citizens. The Director is responsible for overseeing all Council on Aging service operations which include a regional paratransit program, an in house congregate and Meals On Wheels program, information and referral services, counseling, outreach, emergency assistance and building maintenance in accordance with the town bylaws along with the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Federal mandates. The COA Director will also serve as the town’s ADA Coordinator and supervises a staff of 19 employees.

A bachelor’s degree in social services, human services, gerontology, health studies, or a related field and a minimum of five years of relevant experience, one year of which must include the supervision of personnel. Master’s degree preferred. Massachusetts Council on Aging (MCOA) preferred but not necessary.

The Director should have a thorough knowledge of the federal, state, and regional services and local resources available to senior citizens; knowledge of funding sources and grant-writing techniques, along with a working knowledge of resources available to those under age 60.

Ability to develop effective and constructive working relationships with senior citizens, service providers, human service agencies, and the general public. Ability to anticipate specific needs of clients; ability to prepare and manage budgets and finances; ability to prepare and administer grants; ability to train and supervise employees and volunteers effectively; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

In addition to education and experience this position requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office products, an ability to organize and prioritize workload and the ability to work effectively in a complex organizational environment.
