The city of Somerville is seeking a Director of Public Space and Urban Forestry to deliver parks, plazas, playgrounds, paths, fields and streetscapes, and manage the city’s urban tree program. The Director will manage the Public Space and Urban Forestry Division of the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD), with direct reports that include high-capacity licensed landscape architects, construction managers and certified arborists. The Director will develop plans and policies that implement Somerville’s adopted SomerVision Comprehensive Plan, adopted Open Space and Recreation Plan, adopted Climate Plan and ongoing initiatives including the city’s Public Space and Public Life planning, Vision Zero planning, Urban Forestry planning and other related initiatives.
The Director must demonstrate depth of experience in project design and implementation, public engagement, policy development, project management and financial management. Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in landscape architecture, urban forestry or related subject with at least five to seven years related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Registered Landscape Architect, Arborist, AICP or PE recommended.
Hours: Full-time; Plus Benefits
Salary: $102,000 per year plus benefits
