The city of Somerville is in search of a Director of Water and Sewer Operations. The Director oversees the city’s water distribution, sewer, drainage, and combined collection systems, serving approximately 15,000 customer accounts and 80,000 residents. The role ensures reliable service, public health and safety, drinking-water quality, fire protection, and regulatory compliance with MWRA, Massachusetts DEP, EPA, and other applicable requirements. The Director manages field operations, staff, supervisors, contractors, emergency response, scheduling, equipment deployment, and 24-hour on-call responsibilities. Key duties include workforce development, licensing, safety training, recruitment, standard operating procedures, lead sampling, regulatory reporting, and operational policy development. The position also supports budgeting, procurement, contract management, and long-term infrastructure planning in coordination with municipal leadership and infrastructure departments. Strong technical expertise in urban water and wastewater systems, supervisory experience, organizational skills, emergency management, communication, data management, and customer service are essential. A Massachusetts Grade 3 Drinking Water License is preferred. Performs other related duties that may be assigned.
Hours: Full-time
Salary: $124,800-$130,800 annualized, plus benefits
