Job Description

The city of Somerville is in search of an Employee Engagement and Retention Specialist.

The Employee Engagement and Retention Specialist advances citywide strategies to strengthen employee engagement, retention, and workplace culture, informed by workforce assessment findings and ongoing employee feedback. This role serves as a visible, accessible HR presence through regular department visits, onboarding touchpoints, and employee check-ins, gathering real-time insights and connecting staff to programs, benefits, and professional development opportunities. The Specialist collaborates with departments and stakeholders to assess employee experience, identify trends, and implement targeted interventions that support engagement, inclusion, and internal career pathways. Responsibilities include enhancing and administering onboarding and orientation programs, supporting mentorship and peer networks, coordinating training and leadership development initiatives, and promoting recognition and tuition reimbursement programs. The role tracks outcomes, evaluates participation and impact, manages vendor relationships, and continuously refines strategies to support a diverse municipal workforce and strengthen the city’s ability to attract and retain talent. Performs other related duties that may be assigned. 

Hours: Full-time, City Hall Hours. In-Person Role. 

Salary: $75,000 annualized, plus benefits
