The town of Dennis seeks a dynamic, focused, and accomplished municipal financial administrator to assume the position of Finance Director. The Finance Director is responsible for the performance of all fiscal and financial activities of the town, including those duties and responsibilities related to municipal finance. The Finance Director is appointed by and responsible to the Select Board.

Dennis is located in Eastern Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Bordered by Cape Cod Bay on the north, Brewster and Harwich on the east, Nantucket Sound on the south, and Yarmouth on the west, the town is comprised of a total area of 22.24 square miles and a land area of 20.61 square miles. Dennis has a year-round population of 13,885 that swells considerably in the summer months, and is located 76 miles southeast of Boston and 260 miles from New York City.

Dennis combines its traditional New England heritage with modern day conveniences.  The villages of East Dennis, Dennis, and South Dennis feature scenic historic districts hailing back to whaling days, while tranquil tree-lined streets meander through Dennis Port and West Dennis. Sixteen inviting beaches lie on the warm waters of Nantucket Sound to the south and on the crisp refreshing waters of Cape Cod Bay to the north.

The Department of Municipal Finance is under the direction of the Finance Director, and includes the departments of Accounting, Assessing, and Treasurer/Collector. The Finance Director also acts as the Town Accountant and is the liaison to the town’s Finance Committee. The Finance Director is the administrator of budgeting, including financial reporting, accountability and control, as well as an advisor on financial and programmatic implications of current and future policies to all town departments, the Town Administrator, and the Select Board. The Finance Director shall be responsible for coordinating all financial tasks required by General Laws, and shall accomplish such tasks in accordance with date specified in the Massachusetts Department of Revenue municipal calendar.

Keeps the Town Administrator, Select Board, management team, and staff appropriately and proactively informed. A critical thinker, intuitive, and a problem solver.

The ideal candidate for the position of Finance Director shall possess the education, experience, and training to perform the duties of the office. The educational qualifications shall consist of a master’s degree, preferably in accounting or business administration, received by an accredited degree-granting college or university. The professional experience shall include at least three years of prior full-time compensated service in accounting or business administration. Alternatively, five or more years of such professional experience and a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline shall qualify the applicant. Seven years or more of prior full-time compensated experience in accounting or business administration shall also qualify the applicant. Finance management experience shall include supervisory responsibility, demonstrated ability in all municipal financing and proper accounting procedures, demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form, and demonstrate ability as an effective supervisor, or any equivalent combination of formal preparation or substantial experience which provides the requisite knowledge and abilities for this position.
