The town of Norfolk is seeking a talented Fire Service Management Executive to lead our growing Fire Department as Fire Chief. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the future of our community’s fire/emergency medical service along with having the opportunity to assist in designing and building a new fire station or fully renovating the current facility for the town. The Norfolk Fire Chief leads a team of professional firefighters consisting of 14 career personnel and seven paid on-call personnel who operate two ambulances at the Advanced Life Support level of emergency care. The Department managed just over 2,000 emergency calls in 2018 and will operate with a budget of just under $1.9 million for FY 2020. This is a “Strong Chief” position as outlined in Chapter 48, Section 42 of the Massachusetts General Law. The town of Norfolk will provide a highly competitive salary ($130-$160k, with exact salary commensurate with experience, education and training) and a full benefits package.
The candidate for this position should have at a minimum, an associate’s degree in fire science or related field, with a bachelor’s degree in fire science or related field being preferred. Additionally, the candidate should have advanced training in fire suppression, tactics and strategies, fire prevention laws and codes, emergency medical services, personnel management, community relations, and budget preparation; plus at least 10 years of experience as a fire officer, with five as a chief officer being preferred. MFA Chief Fire Officer (CFO) or NFA Executive Fire Officer (EFO) is required or must be attained within two years of appointment.
The candidate should at a minimum be a Massachusetts certified EMT with a Massachusetts paramedic certification being preferred. The successful candidate must reside within a reasonable distance as determined by the appointing authority, within six months from date of appointment, with residency being preferred.
