The town of Grafton, MA seeks qualified candidates for full-time Fire Chief. The Town of Grafton (pop.18,000) is located in east central Massachusetts, southeast of Worcester. While Grafton is a majority residential community, there are a few major developments including a robust Wyman-Gordon manufacturing facility, the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, and a MBTA commuter rail station connecting to Worcester and Boston.

The Grafton Fire Department is one of the largest paid all-call departments in the state. Currently, there is a volunteer Fire Chief who has served in the Fire Department for over 40 years who will be retiring. The new Fire Chief will be a F/T paid employee. There is also a Call Deputy Chief, two  call Assistant Chiefs, three call Captains, and about 65 call firefighters. There is one F/T and one P/T administrative personnel. There are three fire stations in Grafton. The town is a member of a regional ambulance service through Medstar which is privately managed.

The town of Grafton operates with a five member Select Board, a Town Administrator, and open Town Meeting form of government. The Fire Chief is appointed by the Town Administrator and affirmed by the  Select Board. Fire Chief works under the administrative direction of the Board of Selectmen and may consult with the Town Administrator on policy issues; works independently as a “Strong Chief” under MGL Chapter 48 Section 42. Bachelor’s degree in fire science, public administration, business administration or a related field; with a minimum of 10 years of progressive responsible firefighting and emergency services experience with at least five years in administrative command officer capacity; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience in a municipal fire department in the greater Massachusetts area is strongly preferred. A master’s degree, prior experience with a paid call Fire department, or with a combination full-time/call department will be positively considered.

The successful candidate is required to reside within a reasonable distance as determined by the appointing authority, within 12 months from date of hire.

Salary range $130,000 DOQ, with competitive benefits package.

A select number of candidates will be invited by the Fire Chief Search Committee to participate in interviews and an assessment center process.
