The town of Avon, Massachusetts, seeks qualified candidates for Fire Chief to replace the Chief that will be retiring after a long career. The town of Avon (pop. 4,800) is a suburban community of 4.4 square miles located 20 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts. The Avon Public Schools are consistently highly ranked among school systems in Massachusetts and the town takes pride in being positively referred to as a “prestigious community.”

The Avon Fire Department is comprised of 13 F/T firefighters and seven (12 funded) paid call firefighters housed in a newly renovated and expanded fire station. The Fire Department provides EMS ambulance services and is part of routine mutual aid with neighboring towns for fire and EMS.

The town seeks a Fire Chief who exhibits strong leadership abilities and presents a new and exciting energy to the department. They must possess excellent communication skills, diplomacy, strong working knowledge of all aspects of the fire service, and unwavering integrity and accountability. They must have an aptitude for planning, labor relations, and municipal budgeting. In addition, they are extremely familiar with training and safety protocols and most importantly, have a great personality.

The Fire Chief is appointed by the Board of Selectmen, and reports to the Town Administrator/Board of Selectmen. The Fire Chief operates under the so-called, “Strong-Chief” statute, MGL. C.48, §42.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, in fire science or related field. Must have seven to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal fire department, of which at least three years are in a supervisory position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be a Massachusetts certified EMT, National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer preferred or able to obtain, Firefighter 1/2, Instructor and Fire Officer 4. Must have/maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

Salary range: $160,000 +/-

A select number of candidates will be invited by the Fire Chief Search Committee to participate in an assessment center process. A conditional offer of employment would be subject to a thorough background investigation and physical examination. The town of Avon is an equal opportunity employer.
