The town of Wilbraham (pop 15,000) is located in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, approximately 80 miles west of Boston. Wilbraham is considered a quiet, suburban/rural and safe town which is an ideal place to raise a family. Its schools and recreational opportunities are of high quality. The community is served by a three-member Board of Selectmen with a full-time Town Administrator and Open Town Meeting as its form of governance. Under MGL C. 48 S. 42A the Chief and all officers and firefighters are appointed by the Board of Selectmen. The Chief works under the administrative direction of the Town Administrator, and is in control of all town property used by the department, and the day to day supervision of a full time career department consisting of a deputy chief, six captains, and 18 Firefighter/EMT’s. He/she manages an annual operating budget of $3.2 million.

The town is looking for a positive and energetic leader who inspires personal commitment and motivation in others by aligning people toward a single vision and a core set of values. The preferred educational qualifications for this position are an undergraduate degree in business or public administration, fire service management, or fire protection engineering, graduate degree highly preferred. Preferred experience includes at least 10 years full time fire and emergency medical service experience as a full time uniformed member of a career department; with seven years in increasingly responsible positions at the level of shift commander or higher. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. Massachusetts EMT certification required, paramedic preferred; Firefighter I/II certification required, graduation from National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program or national designation of Chief Fire Officer preferred; Massachusetts Fire Chief credentialing preferred. Residency within 10 miles of any town boundary line within one year from date of hire. Salary range $82,000 to $116,000 DOQ, plus generous stipend for serving as emergency manager, benefit package, employment contract to be negotiated.
