Job Description

The city of Melrose is seeking a Junior Project Engineer to provide engineering, technical, and administrative support to the Department of Public Works. This position works under the guidance and direction of the City Engineer and Deputy City Engineer and is best suited for early-career engineers interested in municipal infrastructure and public works projects.

Duties include assisting with the planning, design, inspection, and coordination of roadway, water, sewer, and drainage projects; supporting construction oversight and field inspections; assisting with project documentation, permitting, and regulatory filings; tracking project data, schedules, and expenditures; coordinating with consultants and City staff; responding to service requests; and performing related duties as assigned. Responsibilities emphasize collaboration and project support rather than independent project management.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. Zero to three years of engineering or construction-related experience is preferred. Familiarity with municipal infrastructure, construction methods, and standard engineering software is desirable. A valid driver’s license is required.

This is a full-time, non-union position (40 hours per week). Starting hourly rate is $33.06–$35.09, commensurate with experience. Equal Opportunity Employer.
