Job Description

The town of Swansea is seeking a skilled and dependable Heavy Equipment/Automotive Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair the department’s fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment, and mechanical tools. This position is responsible for approximately 140 pieces of equipment serving the Highway, Facilities, and Parks departments, with primary emphasis on loaders, backhoes, excavators, and construction dump trucks/plow trucks critical to construction and winter operations. Duties include performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, ordering parts and supplies, and completing most repairs in-house while coordinating with outside vendors when necessary.

The Mechanic works with minimal daily supervision under the direction of the DPW Director and Assistant Superintendent/Facilities Manager and is responsible for prioritizing repairs based on operational needs. This position also serves as a backup plow and salting driver during inclement weather and may assist other departments as time allows.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and welding; the ability to operate diagnostic tools and heavy equipment; and a commitment to safety, reliability, and quality workmanship. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and effective communication with staff, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
