The town of Stoneham is a residential suburban community located at the intersection of I93 and I95 less than 10 miles to the city of Boston. Stoneham currently is seeking to fill the full-time union position of Operation Engineer at the Public Works Department classified within the Stoneham Classified Employees Association. This position works under the general direction of the Director of Public Works and the Deputy Director of Public Works, performs field work, office work, survey and layout assignments, providing support to the DPW in a professional nature.
The Operations Engineer is a union position that assist and coordinates with the Deputy Director activities of Public Works staff with other town departments. Administers in the creation of project and program development and implementation. Prepares estimates, budgets and evaluate cost alternatives for public works projects. Prepare the necessary documents associated with the annual Chapter 90 paving program. Utilize engineering instruments for surveying (laser level, total station, GPS unit, etc. procedures. Perform other related work, as required
Education and experience for this position: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required. A minimum of five to seven years of acceptable civil engineering, general construction knowledge or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or Engineer in Training certification preferred.
Knowledge, Ability and Skills: Candidate must possess a valid MA Class D Driver’s License. Possess ability to write clearly and concisely, operate keyboard/computer at an efficient speed, utilize computer programs such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS and Microsoft Office, ability to plan, organize, and communicate and collaborate with many groups, including vendors, general public and colleagues.
The prospective employee must successfully complete a CORI (Criminal Offender Records Inquiry), physical examination, including a drug screening. The town reserves the right to run additional CORI and background checks as allowed under Massachusetts General Law.

Stoneham offers generous benefit package in addition to a competitive salary. Hiring range $63,183.52 to 66,369.15, is commensurate with education and experience. Open until filled.
