Wellesley is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Planning Director. Reporting to the Planning Board Chair, the Director manages, directs and administers municipal land use planning, zoning, and subdivision control programs within the town as delineated by state statute and town bylaws and zoning bylaws. Is the town’s principle professional advisor and resource on planning and development issues, providing technical expertise and professional techniques for the Board and the town.

Recommends, prepares, and implements policies, programs, plans, and studies needed to guide short-range and long-range planning and land use challenges and opportunities. Assists in the development and maintenance of a functional and attractive residential community, using goals identified in the Unified Plan 2018-2028. Must be holistic, focused on sustainability and resiliency, and sensitive to the history of the town’s growth and character. Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Planning Department and directly supervises Department personnel.

Work routines are independently developed and refined to carry out assignments through to completion. General work assignments, goals and schedules are discussed with and are subject to Board approval. The position requires occasional site visits and attendance at frequent evening meetings.

Minimum requirements include: master’s degree in municipal planning or related field, or equivalent experience. Five years planning experience and two years supervisory experience. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal planning, zoning, and subdivision laws and regulations. The anticipated hiring range is $81,450 – $99,550 (full salary range is $71,500 – $109,500) with an excellent benefit package.
