The town of Cohasset, a dynamic, waterfront community 20 miles south of Boston, with a AAA-bond rating (S&P) and a full-service local government, is seeking a Director of Planning. Reporting to the Town Manager, and providing support for the elected Planning Board, the Director of Planning administers the office that performs professional, technical and administrative work in planning and land use controls, coordinates both short and long range plans for the town, enforces Cohasset General ByLaws, and provides support to town planning committees, the Board of Selectmen and Town Meeting.
The position requires knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations, a bachelor’s degree in planning or related field, and five years of experience as a Town Planner or a similar municipal government capacity; AICP and/or a master’s degree in planning is strongly preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Additionally, candidates should have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and zoning, working knowledge of Massachusetts land use laws and case law involving zoning, subdivision regulation, stormwater management, and the State Scenic Road Act.
Candidates should have strong leadership, supervision and public management skills; experience in employee and customer relations; the ability to work both collaboratively and independently; and a genuine interest in working with the community in an open and accessible manner. Salary ranges between $75-$90,000 and is commensurate with experience. Cohasset offers a comprehensive benefits package.
