The Avon Police Department seeks highly motivated, community-oriented police officers for lateral transfer to this department. The applicant must be currently employed by a civil service police department and be eligible for transfer.

The applicant will have successfully completed a MPTC full-time police academy, must possess Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license, Massachusetts license to carry firearms, successfully complete a comprehensive pre-employment background investigation, physical, drug and psychological testing, possess problem solving ability, believe in a community policing model, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

Located 17 miles South of Boston, Avon is approximately 4.5 sq. miles with a population of more than 4,500. The Avon Police Department consists of 16 sworn Police Officers, six civilian dispatchers, and civilian support staff.

Specialty assignments include: Motorcycle Patrol, Mountain Bike Unit, School Resource Officer and Detective / Court Prosecutor. Avon is a Metro-LEC member agency and participates with the MOP and Peer Support Units.

This position is represented by the Avon Police Union and is full-time with a four days on, two days off rotating schedule. Candidates must be available to work all shifts for a 24/7 operation, including weekends and holidays. The current salary for officers is $51,391.15 – $59,738, not including differentials/educational incentive. Additional opportunities exist for stipend, overtime and frequent detail work.

The Avon Police Department offers educational incentives for associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degrees, frequent in-service and other specialized training.
