The town of Bridgewater is seeking a qualified professional to fill the full-time position of
Roadways Superintendent. Serving under the general supervision of the Director of Public
Works, the Roadways Superintendent performs a variety of routine and complex technical work
related to project management for mid-sized highway construction projects, snow and ice
removal operations, infrastructure projects and labor management.
The general scope of the responsibilities of the position is to perform supervisory and
administrative work in planning, organizing, directing, and supervising the Roadways
Department, as well as functioning as a lead (non-administrative) worker; all other related work
as required. The Roadways Superintendent is responsible for maintaining and improving upon
the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.
The position requires extensive knowledge of:
• Professional, technical and administrative work relative to the care, custody and
maintenance of town roadways including sidewalks and right of ways, bridges, ditches
and brook clearing, drainage systems, both above and below ground, tree maintenance,
town owned cemeteries, and some town owned grounds, parking lots and walkways to
all municipal and school properties, line striping of road and parking lots, signage, traffic
and street light repair and maintenance, snow and ice removal, and related duties. The
duties above are illustrative and not all inclusive.
• Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations relating road projects including design
selection, contract bidding, awards, and management.
• Thorough knowledge of highway department financing and administration.
• Knowledge of snow and ice control techniques and practices.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

In addition, the candidate we seek must be a positive, team player and have exceptional
interpersonal skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as well as maintaining
complete and accurate records. This position requires a progressive approach due to budgetary constraints, strong organizational and leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and internal customers alike. In addition, said candidate must demonstrate computer proficiency inclusive of electronic permitting.
Candidates must hold an associate’s degree, although a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is
preferred; and eight years of related public works experience, including four years in a
supervisory role is also necessary. An equivalent combination of education and experience may
be considered. A valid C.D.L. Class B license and possession of a valid Hoisting Engineer’s license with a minimum of a 1B, 2A, and 3B endorsement are required.
This position is a member of the United Steelworkers’ union and has a full benefit package in
accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. The position is 40 hours per week
and is classified at Grade 13 in the Classification Schedule with the salary range of: $66,054.04 – $86,668.92.
