The town of Acushnet (pop. 10,303) a primarily residential suburb located in Southeastern Mass. with a strong sense of history and community, is seeking an experienced, motivated individual to serve as its next Town Administrator. Acushnet is a stable community whose Town Administrator recently resigned to accept a TA position in a larger community; the prior TA served in Acushnet for over 17 years.
The TA is the chief operating and administrative officer and reports to a three-member Board of Selectmen. The position’s responsibilities are defined in the General ByLaws.
Key knowledge for a successful candidate is familiarity and experience with MA purchasing law, collective bargaining, personnel law, finance and budget, grant writing/administration and inter-government relations.
Important personal attributes include the ability to supervise and provide leadership to all departments/employees under the control of the Board of Selectmen (Town Hall, Fire, Police, DPW, COA, etc.) including a municipal golf course, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of citizen volunteers serving on the town’s boards, commissions and committees. The ability to bring consensus from many diverse opinions is key.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree (required) with a master’s in public administration preferred. Certification or ability to become certified as a MA Procurement Officer required. Experience with MA Municipal government in a progressively responsible position is essential. Experience with open town meeting, golf course operations, water/sewer issues, and working with state/federal government are all preferred. Excellent written and communication skills, strong organizational, analytical and decision-making skills are essential.
Salary and benefits are negotiable; the incumbent TA’s salary was $126,721 with a strong benefits package. The Board anticipates negotiating an initial contract term of 3.5 years (to conclude on June 30, 2023).
