The Town Attorney occupies a position of responsibility and trust requiring the highest ethical standards, discretion, and judgment. This position reports directly to the Town Manager and is a key advisor to town administration, elected officials, and appointed boards, committees, and commissions. The selected candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced and dynamic office. The position represents the town in all legal matters including critical issues facing the town as we strive to achieve the highest quality of life for our citizens, businesses and visitors while preserving and protecting our environment and natural resources.

The successful candidate must have a Juris Doctor degree and be admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Ten years of legal experience is required with six years of practice in a municipal, or comparable, setting preferred. Specific areas of required experience include: general municipal government laws, regulations, and statutes; zoning laws; contract and tort laws; public bidding laws; conservation and environmental laws; conflict of interest laws; rules of civil and criminal procedure; rules of evidence; and administrative law.

The town of Barnstable (population 45,000) is made up of seven distinct villages, each with their own unique character: Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable. In addition, Barnstable is considered the “hub” of Cape Cod with the largest healthcare facilities, retail shopping centers and major transportation operations including the Barnstable Municipal Airport, Cape Cod Regional Transportation Authority that offers bus service, the Steamship Authority that provides passenger and freight services to the Islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Barnstable has a budget of over $200 million and has enjoyed a AAA bond rating for several years.
