Position: Water Distribution/Water Treatment Operator (Full-Time)

Salary: $29 to $34/hour

Routine Schedule: 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (40 hours/week)

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

Operating and inspecting plant equipment, pump stations, and chlorination stations; performing process control tests and routine lab analyses; reading gauges and meters; adjusting process equipment to perform as specified; completing daily process control sheets; taking corrective action, as necessary, to keep facility equipment and processes functioning smoothly per plant standard operating procedures; performing routine inspection and maintenance at treatment facilities and pumping stations; performing backflow prevention device tests and cross-connection surveys; maintaining facility appearance and clean work areas; working the membrane filtration system; and performing distribution system repairs, flushing, valve maintenance, snow plowing, fire hydrant maintenance, lawn mowing/weedwacking, recording data, meter repairs/replacements, and assisting other staff.

Licenses*

• Valid Massachusetts Class B commercial driver license with air brake endorsement with safe driving record.
• Valid Massachusetts Class HE-B hoisting engineering front end loader/backhoe license with safe driving record.
• Preferred: Massachusetts Grade I water treatment certification or higher (must obtain within one year).
• Preferred: Massachusetts Grade I water distribution certification or higher (must obtain within one year).
• Preferred: Massachusetts cross-connection surveyor and backflow prevention device tester.

*Note: Relevant experience may substitute licenses as appropriate. The right candidate will be willing to learn and expresses enthusiasm for pursuing his/her education.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate in English.
• Ability to physically complete all assignments, including entering confined spaces, crouching/kneeling, reaching, lifting up to 100 lbs., etc.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in a related position and environment with knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of water distribution and treatment.
• Proficiency in the care and use of all site-specific, facility-required personal protection equipment, including (but not limited to) respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, safety glasses, and safety suits (OSHA certified preferred).
• Ability to efficiently test and operate equipment such as pumps, motors, VFDs, back-up generators, valves, gates, blowers, scrubbers, chemical feed systems, chlorine gas disinfection equipment, chlorine dioxide system, and membrane filters system (including maintenance to the membranes).
• Ability to diagnose problems in single or multiple unit processes, troubleshoot basic equipment, and take corrective action within policy and procedure limitations.
• Ability to use SCADA and Microsoft Office to record data and prepare reports for MassDEP/EPA.
• Work rotational shifts (including weekends and holidays) and be available for 24-hour, on-call emergencies.
