An MMA webinar on July 15 will provide an overview of private roads, with examples of local practices and insights from an experienced attorney.

With more than 3,000 miles of private roads and pressure to expand housing and other developments across the state, municipalities can’t escape conversations about unaccepted roads. The webinar will provide foundational information to help municipal officials navigate these community conversations.

Panelists include:
• Roby Whitehouse, assistant public works director in Yarmouth and president of the Massachusetts Highway Association
• Karis North, attorney with Murphy, Hesse, Toomey & Lehane LLP
• Tonya Capparello, public works director and town engineer in Wilbraham
• Richard Benevento, chair of the Parking and Traffic Commission in Beverly and chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Middleton

The webinar will cover legal boundaries for private road repairs and maintenance, recommendations for approval of new private roads, and considerations for accepting roads.

Online registration is available for the 75-minute webinar, which will begin at noon. Only MMA members may register. MMA members include elected officials and municipal employees from MMA member communities across the state. Media members are not permitted to attend.
