Attorney General Andrea Campbell gives the keynote for the Women Elected Municipal Officials’ spring symposium, held virtually on April 28.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell was the keynote speaker today for the Women Elected Municipal Officials’ spring symposium, which was held virtually.

Campbell encouraged female leaders to support one another and think creatively about civil service. She emphasized the need for unapologetic leadership and policies that protect marginalized groups.

WEMO Committee Member Samantha Perlman moderated a question and answer session, where attendees asked about balancing work and personal life, as well as overcoming local resistance to MBTA Community zoning laws.

After the keynote, attendees engaged in a series of breakout discussions, which focused on gathering support for controversial policies, building support as female leaders, addressing microaggressions, and mentoring newly elected female colleagues.

WEMO Chair Beth Casavant, a member of the Shrewsbury Select Board, began the symposium with welcoming remarks before attendees joined breakout rooms for a virtual “Coffee & Conversation” networking session, where they discussed the most pressing issues affecting their communities. Attendees also provided the WEMO Committee with input about programming for the year ahead.
