Leyden was settled in 1737 as part of "Fall Town," which included Bernardston and Colrain. It was named for Leiden, Netherlands, the Pilgrims’ previous refuge before America. Leyden’s famous sons include inventor John Riddell and sculptor Henry Kirke Brown.
