The Massachusetts Municipal Management Association has announced the first recipients of assistance from the Nancy Galkowski Leadership Fund.

Tyngsborough Assistant Town Administrator Nina Nazarian and Dedham Senior Tax Clerk Sandra Matar received funds to assist in their professional development.

Nazarian will be pursuing procurement training, and Matar is working on a capstone project as she completes her master’s program at UMass Boston.

The Nancy Galkowski Leadership Fund was created in 2013, following Galkowski’s death from pancreatic cancer. She had a 35-year career in municipal management, and developing the next generation of municipal managers was always a priority for her. She mentored many young managers in Massachusetts, and she was also active in the International City/County Management Association, leaving a legacy across the country.

The fund is designed to assist managers, assistants and those just entering the profession with financial assistance to pursue professional development. Awards will be made twice per year, and notices will be published in The Beacon.
