Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The position reports to the Building Inspector and is responsible for skilled clerical and record-keeping work in assisting in discharging the duties of the office, and all other related work as required.

Assistant Building Inspector: Supports the Director of Inspection Services in enforcing the Massachusetts Building Code; assists the Building Inspector in enforcing the city ordinances, including Zoning Ordinances: responding to police and fire emergencies outside of normal business hours; and attends meetings and trainings occasionally outside of normal business hours.
Code Enforcement Officer: Conducts inspections, investigations, and communication outreach activities throughout the city to ensure compliance with state Sanitary Codes and other relevant state and local regulations.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Enforces adopted regulatory codes and ordinances about building construction, condemnation, and demolition of buildings and structures.
- Assists the Building Inspector in preparing and enforcing such rules and regulations as required by legislative authority to properly exercise the department’s responsibilities.
- Assists the Building Inspector in controlling construction, erection, repair, alteration, demolition, removal, and occupancy of all buildings and structures within his/her jurisdiction.
- As directed by the Building Inspector, assigns, trains, and evaluates all departmental administrative and inspection personnel.
- Assists in coordinating department activities with other departments, boards, and commissions where required.
- Assists the Building Inspector in reviewing all applications, examining and approving plans and specifications; issues permits for the construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, demolition, removal, or change in use or occupancy of buildings and structures; and inspects premises that have been issued permits to enforce compliance.
- Inspects and certifies buildings and structures in accordance with the Massachusetts State Building Code.
- Assists the Building Inspector in directing all department activities, including the issuance of permits, notices, certificates, correspondence, stop work orders, and placards, maintaining departmental records and court.
- Assist with supervision of maintenance of all city buildings and grounds.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
As required by law, qualified individuals must:
• Have at least years of experience in supervising building construction or design
OR
• A two-year associate degree in a related field
AND
• Be certified by the state Board of Building Regulations and Standards or able to pass required exams
