HOURS: 37.5 Hours per Week
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
AFFILIATION: C Group – AFSCME Clerical – $25.62 – $32.13

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide the necessary supervisory, administrative and clerical support to assist the Town Clerk in the keeping of official municipal records, vital statistics, conducting elections, management of Town Census, posting meetings, updating web site, and providing information to the general public and town departments. In the absence of the Town Clerk, the Assistant shall perform the duties, have the powers, and be subject to the requirements and penalties applicable to the Town Clerk. The Assistant Town Clerk is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas placed under his/her direction and control.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Town Clerk with the overall administration and daily operations of the Town Clerk’s Office and provides responsive customer service to residents, public officials, and Town departments.
  • Assists with all aspects of federal, state, and local elections, including voter registration, vote-by-mail and absentee voting, election workers, polling locations, voting equipment, early voting, and election-day activities.
  • Registers, maintains, and certifies vital records, including births, marriages, and deaths, and completes required state reporting.
  • Maintains voter and annual census records and prepares the Annual Street List, jury list, and other required municipal and state reports.
  • Issues and maintains municipal licenses, permits, and certificates; collects and reconciles departmental fees and receipts.
  • Assists with Town Meeting, board and committee appointments, oaths of office, public meeting postings, and required Open Meeting Law, ethics, and related municipal records.
  • Maintains official and archival municipal records and assumes the responsibilities of the Town Clerk in the Clerk’s absence as provided under M.G.L. c. 41, § 19.Full job description can be found on the town Website.
