The city of Newburyport is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and service-oriented Building Commissioner to lead the Building Department. This full-time management position is responsible for administering and enforcing the Massachusetts State Building Code, local zoning bylaws, and related state and local regulations while ensuring the safe construction, occupancy, and maintenance of buildings throughout the community.
The Building Commissioner oversees all departmental operations, including permitting, inspections, code enforcement, staff supervision, budget administration, and electronic permitting records. The position works closely with residents, contractors, developers, municipal boards and departments, and regulatory agencies to support safe, compliant, and efficient development throughout the city.
Qualified candidates will possess a college degree or equivalent combination of education and extensive experience in building construction, design, or related construction trades, along with at least five years of progressively responsible supervisory experience. Certification as a Massachusetts Local Building Inspector is required. Building Inspector/Commissioner certification is preferred or must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of appointment. A valid Massachusetts driver’s license is required.
The FY27 annual salary is $104,644, with an excellent benefits package provided in accordance with the Teamsters Department Heads Union collective bargaining agreement.
