Job Description

The town of Braintree seeks a Chief of Police to provide leadership and expertise in the administration of the town’s police functions, including protecting life, safeguarding property and enhancing the quality of life within the town. The Braintree Police department has 89 sworn personnel, one Animal Control Officer and 21 civilian employees, 10 of whom are public safety dispatchers, plus 27 special police officers.

The ideal candidate will have a reputation for building and maintaining community trust, and significant experience with community policing. The Chief of Police must also have strong investigative skills and a proven track record of fiscal responsibility and collective bargaining practices. A demonstrated commitment to mentoring and advancing department personnel through professional development and leading by example are also desired. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing, managing, and overseeing the Police department’s budget, managing the department’s facilities and equipment, and establishing policies, procedures and general orders within the Department.

The town of Braintree is a thriving residential and commercial community on the Massachusetts coast, located approximately twelve miles south of Boston. With a population of approximately 39,000 that swells to 100,000 daily due to its location, the town covers about 14.5 square miles and is a transportation hub for residents and commuters. The town has been under a Mayor-Council form of government since 2008.

This is a non-civil service position that is appointed by and reports to the Mayor. The Mayor’s appointment of the Chief of Police is subject to the approval of the Town Council per the town’s Charter. The position’s base salary range is $154,723.27 – 185,499.57. An appointee who qualifies for incentives has the potential to increase the salary package range to $205,789 – $246,714. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree or advanced training in law enforcement management is preferred. Applicants must have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in a law enforcement agency, five of which have been in an administrative or command position.
