The city of Portland is searching for a kind, curious, collaborative, energetic, and strategic Deputy Human Resources Director who is passionate about serving the city’s workforce of more than 2,300 full-time, part-time, per diem, on-call, and seasonal employees.

Portland is Maine’s largest and most complex municipality, and its human resources needs are equally complex. The HR Department is responsible for labor relations, safety, benefits and compensation, employee-centered DEIB initiatives, strategic culture change, recruitment and retention, and other traditional and progressive HR functions. The department is staffed by 16 dedicated professionals, and supported by HR business partners in each of the large departments.

The Deputy Director supports the Human Resources Director and shares responsibility for the strategic direction of the department. Based on skills and expertise, the Deputy and Director divide leadership responsibilities of the functional areas of the department, including providing mentoring, guidance, support, and feedback to staff in those designated areas. The Deputy also has primary responsibility for the financial functions of the department.
