Position Summary
The town of Norton (population approximately 20,000) is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking municipal finance professional to serve as its next Town Accountant. Working directly with the Town Manager and municipal leadership team, the Town Accountant will play a central role in modernizing financial operations, strengthening internal controls, improving transparency, and advancing professional, data-driven government. The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, leadership, innovative, and a commitment to building systems and improving processes that will benefit the organization and community for years to come.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and oversee the town’s general ledger, financial records, reconciliations, and accounting systems.
- Review expenditures and warrants; monitor budgets; and ensure compliance with Massachusetts municipal finance laws, DOR/DLS requirements, and local policies.
- Prepare financial reports, coordinate year-end closing and audits, and complete required state and federal reporting.
- Strengthen internal controls, modernize financial systems, streamline workflows, and improve the quality and accessibility of financial information.
- Provide financial guidance and analysis to the Town Manager, departments, boards, and municipal leadership team.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts municipal accounting, finance laws, and DOR/DLS reporting requirements.
- Municipal accounting experience strongly preferred; experience as an Assistant Town Accountant, Assistant Auditor, Finance Director, or comparable municipal finance professional is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, technology, and leadership skills.
- MCGA and/or CPA certification preferred, or the ability to obtain an applicable municipal finance credential.
