The city of Watertown seeks a highly qualified, skilled candidate to fill the position of Veterans Services Officer (VSO) in the Human Services Department. The VSO helps veterans and their dependents navigate the federal Veterans Administration and Massachusetts Chapter 115 benefits processes and supports veterans with applications for other local, state, and federal benefits. As part of the Human Services team, the VSO also supports department initiatives related to food access, housing stability, mental health and substance use prevention, disability support, and more, in response to evolving community needs, particularly as they relate to veterans’ services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of four years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must be a veteran as defined under Massachusetts General Law and must have experience working with veterans. Must have or be able to attain within six months Veterans Affairs (VA) Accreditation and Massachusetts Veterans Service Officer Certification. Position requires knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations impacting veterans. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with commitment to community engagement and collaboration with internal and external customers.
TERMS/HOURS: This union position works 37.5 hours/week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). This position could be eligible for up to one day of remote work and flexible work hours.
SALARY: There is a 15-step salary range of $89,498 to $118,090. Hiring above Step 1 is dependent on qualifications, experience and education; applicants are typically hired in the lower half of the range.
