The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs in April selected 17 cities and towns to participate in the 2012 “Solarize Mass” program.
As part of a statewide effort to reach Gov. Deval Patrick’s goal of 250 megawatts of solar photovoltaic installed by 2017, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center launched the Solarize Massachusetts pilot in the spring of 2011. Solarize Mass deployed a grassroots, volunteer-driven effort that is bringing solar power to 162 Massachusetts homes at discounted rates.
The participating communities in the 2012 program will benefit from a tiered pricing structure that enables greater savings based on the number of people who are making use of the solar power, according to the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.
Of the 17 cities and towns chosen for the Solarize Mass program, seven are working with at least one neighboring town: Pittsfield and Lenox; Sutton and Millbury; and Lincoln, Sudbury and Wayland.
The other 10 participating communities are Acton, Arlington, Boston, Hopkinton, Melrose, Mendon, Montague, Newburyport, Palmer, and Shirley.
The state currently has 100 megawatts of solar capacity spread among 331 cities and towns.
