The Baker administration announced on March 29 that 36 municipalities will receive funding through the Municipal Small Bridge Program for the preservation, repair and replacement of bridges with spans of 10 to 20 feet.

The communities will be awarded a total of $16 million.

Cities and towns are responsible for maintaining approximately 1,300 bridges across the state with spans between 10 and 20 feet. The state program targets bridges that are not eligible for federal funding and allows for a maximum reimbursement of $500,000 per year per municipality.

The program was was funded at $50 million over five years as part of a transportation bond bill signed into law last August. The program was included in the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Capital Investment Plan.

In February, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito and MassDOT officials announced the program’s first two awards. A ceremony was held in Lenox to award $750,000 to the towns of Washington and Blandford.

Applications for the Municipal Small Bridge Program will be accepted three times a year, with deadlines of Oct. 31, Feb. 28 and June 30. Approved projects will be funded through reimbursement agreements between MassDOT and the municipality.
