Our members are the local governments of Massachusetts and their elected and appointed leadership.
Forty-five students received a Certificate in Local Government Leadership and Management this spring from Suffolk University and the MMA.
The students graduated from a program designed exclusively for municipal employees interested in furthering their professional career in local government.
Two programs were held during the 2015-2016 academic year, one hosted by the town of Barnstable and one hosted by the town of Burlington.
Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito spoke at the Burlington graduation ceremony, which was held at Suffolk University on June 23. In a ceremony in Barnstable on May 27, outgoing Barnstable Town Manager Tom Lynch offered reflections from his career of public service.
Student and faculty speakers also provided insights, commentary, and humorous anecdotes from a year of Fridays spent together grappling with the challenges of public management.
The MMA’s partnership with Suffolk University’s Moakley Center for Public Management offered five graduate-level courses at each location during the 2015-2016 academic year. Previous successful programs ran in the town of Natick in 2011-2012, the town of Reading in 2012-2013, the towns of Barnstable and Watertown in 2013-2014, and the Town of Duxbury in 2014-2015.
The Certificate in Local Government Leadership and Management is a graduate-level academic program that provides participants with a solid grounding in public management. Certificate program courses are the same curriculum offered at the Boston campus of Suffolk University.
