Position Purpose: The purpose of the Newburyport Health department is to educate, promote, improve, and protect the public health and wellbeing of all the residents of the city of Newburyport, while contributing to building a healthy community and environment in which to live. Under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Law and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Federal Public Health Law’s, the Health Department is mandated under a dutiful obligation to develop and implement health policies, standards, bylaws, and regulations. The Health department is also obligated to conduct inspections and provide public health services to the community.

This successful candidate will possess: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, environmental science or other related field and three to five years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification and experience. A master’s degree in public health is preferred. Newburyport residency is not required.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a recognized public health position, preferably with a local Health department.
  • Registration as a sanitarian is preferred. Must be eligible to obtain required Massachusetts Certifications as a condition of employment as outlined below:
  • The possession of/or the ability to obtain the following licenses/certifications: Lead Paint Determination, Certified Pool Operator, SERVSAFE and Soil Evaluator.
  • A combination of education and employment experience may be substituted for minimum requirements at the discretion of the Board of Health.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen and discern issues of concern.
  • Proficiency in the use of a computer and associated programs and software.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass Criminal Records Check (CORI) 

Special Requirements:

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

  • Knowledge of public health practices
  • Knowledge of applicable state and municipal laws
  • Ability to address the public’s concerns with diplomacy.
  • Skilled in all applicable computer applications and preferable knowledge of social media/communication methods.

 The regular work schedule consists of Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Thursday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. – noon.  This is a full-time salaried position in the Teamsters Department Head Union Local 170. Salary range between $94,911 to $98,743
