The MMA will host a webinar on July 15 that will provide an overview of private roads, with examples of local practice from municipal employees and an experienced attorney.

With over 3,000 miles of private roads and pressure to expand housing and other developments across the state, municipalities can’t escape conversations about unaccepted roads. This webinar will provide foundational information to help municipal officials navigate community conversations about private roadways.

Attendees will hear from:

  • Roby Whitehouse, assistant public works director in Yarmouth and President of the Massachusetts Highway Association
  • Karis North, attorney, Murphy, Hesse, Toomey & Lehane LLP
  • Rich Benevento, chairperson of the parking and traffic commission for Beverely and chairperson of the zoning board of appeals for Middleton

This webinar will cover legal boundaries for private road repair and maintenance, recommendations for approval of new private roads, and considerations for accepting roads.

Online registration is available for the 75-minute webinar, which will begin at noon. Only MMA members may register. MMA members include elected officials and municipal employees from MMA member communities across the state. Media members are not permitted to attend.
