The city of Watertown is seeking a talented and motivated professional to fill the newly created position of Deputy Director of Public Works. Reporting directly to the Director of Public Works, this key leadership role is responsible for supporting and managing the department’s day-to-day operations.

Key responsibilities include managing departmental programs and special projects—such as the implementation of a new work order and inventory management system—as well as serving as the primary liaison to the city’s 311 Service Center to ensure timely, accurate, and courteous customer service. Additional duties involve supporting the development and execution of the department’s operating and capital budgets, managing vendor relationships and procurement processes, playing a lead role in workforce development, including recruiting and training, supporting employee/labor relations, and fostering a positive and productive work culture.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree; at least seven years of progressively responsible experience, including management and supervisory experience, in a municipal public works or similar setting; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

TERMS/HOURS: This is a 37.5 hour per week position, Mon-Fri from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There may be opportunities for some flexible scheduling with management approval.

SALARY: Starting salary of $115,808. Hiring above Step 1 is dependent on qualifications and experience. The city also offers competitive benefits and paid time off packages.
