The town of Braintree is seeking a qualified individual for a full-time position responsible for performing technical inspection and enforcement duties related to building construction, zoning, and weights and measures. This role ensures compliance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapters 98 and 295, the State Building Code (780 CMR), the Architectural Access Code (521 CMR), Town Zoning Bylaws, and General Ordinances.
Duties include inspecting buildings under construction, reconstruction, or alteration; reviewing building permit applications and plans; issuing permits and collecting fees; responding to consumer and community complaints; inspecting commercial weighing and measuring devices (scales, meters, scanners); and enforcing community standards. The position may also involve initiating court action, testifying in judicial proceedings, preparing reports, and maintaining accurate records. Field work includes exposure to construction sites and various weather conditions.
Qualifications include certification as a Sealer of Weights and Measures and Local Building Inspector in Massachusetts, with a minimum of five years’ experience in building construction or a related two-year degree. A valid Massachusetts driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle during work hours are required. Strong communication, organizational, and enforcement skills are essential. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.
