In early April, Braintree announced that it would waive the fees for all building, electrical and plumbing permits required to repair damage that resulted from flooding in March.

Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan said the idea emerged during one of his regular meetings with department heads in the aftermath of the flooding, which caused damage throughout southeastern Massachusetts as well as in other parts of the state.

Hundreds of homes and businesses suffered damage in Braintree, Sullivan said. He estimated that by waiving the permit fees, Braintree will forgo “a few thousand dollars, at a minimum” in revenue.

“But it’s an action that I think is appropriate, given the circumstances,” he said. “It offers financial relief as well as recognition and, hopefully, some comfort to impacted residents of our town.”

Sullivan noted that while the permit fees are being waived, “You’re still required to pull the permits, you’re still required to have inspections. There is still going to be our municipal oversight.”
